SCHENECTADY, NY (WRGB) -- Brown Transportation teamed up with some schools in the Schenectady City School District for National School Bus Safety Week, last month. The transportation company holds an annual school bus safety poster contest for students in grades K-6. This year's theme: #StopOnRed.

Nearly 150 students in various grade levels submitted poster designs promoting safety in and around school busses.

Brown Transportation Operations Manager Joe Rajczak said, "The kids are really given free reign as to what they want that poster or message to be. Some of the creativity of the kids has been outstanding and very uplifting."

General Manager of Brown Transportation Dave Christopher added, "In New York state, approximately 50,000 cars are tagged every year for passing stopped school busses. There are surveys done by bus drivers and state associations and it's a very serious issue, kids are very vulnerable when they're getting off the bus."

The winners of the contest were announced at Wednesday night's Schenectady City School District meeting. CBS 6 Morning Anchor Melissa Lee was on the panel of this year's judges.

Congratulations to first place winner, Kaitlyn Spring of Zoller Elementary. She won a field trip for her class and $50 cash prize. Neha Kitani of Zoller received second place and $25. In third place, Aleshanee Sharpe from Yates Elementary. She won $10.
